Warm, thoughtfully designed, and surprisingly calm once you step inside, this café has quickly become one of the standout lifestyle spots in the city.

To fully appreciate what it offers, we visited the café twice — first on a busy weeknight, and again during lunchtime a few days later. Experiencing Downtown Cafe in two completely different moods allowed us to see its strengths both as a cozy evening hangout and as a bright, refreshing midday stop.

A PREMIUM CAFÉ EXPERIENCE IN DOWNTOWN GENSAN

Located beside Land Bank, Downtown Cafe’s interiors immediately set the tone with warm wooden accents, soft pendant lighting, airy spacing, and curated décor. No matter the time of day, stepping inside feels like leaving the Pioneer Avenue rush behind.

At night, the café transforms into a warm, dimly lit sanctuary filled with mellow music and the soft buzz of conversations. During lunch, the space feels bright, energetic, and refreshing, perfect for meals, meetings, or quiet solo time.

Both times, the ambiance delivered exactly what it promised — comfort, creativity, and calm.

MATCHA, HOJICHA & MORE: DRINKS THAT STAND OUT

Across our two visits with Marz, Kath and Billy, we sampled Downtown Cafe’s much-talked-about matcha and hojicha drinks:

• Gokou Matcha
• Matcha Sea Salt
• Premium Hojicha Latte

All were smooth, balanced, and easily among the best matcha-based drinks now available in the city.

For non-matcha drinkers, the menu also includes Shaken Cinnamon Latte, Sea Salt Latte, Downtown Rosetta, Rose Osmanthus Lemonade, and single-origin pour-over coffees. All espresso-based drinks use YARDSTICK COFFEE as their base — a respected specialty coffee brand from Manila — giving Downtown Cafe a strong edge for serious coffee lovers.

Coffee fans can even grab YARDSTICK COFFEE beans and merch to take home, bringing the same café-quality beans into their own kitchens.

GOOD-FOR-THREE FOOD: HEARTY, GENEROUS & SATISFYING

Since we visited twice, we were able to try different dishes in different settings — lunch and dinner — all served in good-for-three portions, one of Downtown Cafe’s biggest value points.

Among the plates we enjoyed across both visits were:

• Salmon Toast
• Pan-Seared Chicken
• Truffle Pasta
• Spaghetti ala Puttanesca
• Chicken in a Basket
• Fish and Chips
• Avocado Toast

Everything was generous, flavorful, and leaned more toward restaurant-style dishes than typical café meals. We couldn’t finish everything at those two instances so we took home our leftovers.

Their wider menu also includes Seafood Marinara, Meatball Pasta, Croissants, French Toast, and the DWTWN Burger — plenty of reasons to return.

One of Downtown Cafe’s strengths is how each section of the café offers a different vibe — something we experienced clearly across our day and night visits.

Main Bar: The Heart of the Café

The illuminated main bar is the café’s visual centerpiece. Here, baristas and bartenders craft everything from YARDSTICK COFFEE–based espresso drinks to cocktails.
Shelves lined with coffee bags, spirits, wines, and books create a stylish backdrop. The bar feels alive at lunch and glows warmly at night — perfect for both focused work and relaxed conversations.

The Back Alley: Industrial Charm

Behind the main dining area is a long, industrial-inspired back alley seating zone with built-in wooden benches, compact side tables, pendant lights, and framed art.

• By day, it’s a quiet, cozy spot for solo diners, readers, or those working on their laptops.
• By night, it becomes an intimate, atmospheric strip that’s ideal for deeper conversations over drinks.

Al Fresco: Open-Air Comfort

Further back is the expanded al fresco area, a refreshing outdoor space ideal for:
