I was on my way to the Netopia Internet Cafe at the Gaisano Mall of GenSan when I chanced upon this mini billboard at the junction of the National Highway and Santiago Boulevard.
The signboard announces the start of the installation of the “Traffic Signal System with Intersection Configuration” at two of the city’s choke points: the National Highway-Santiago Boulevard Junction and the National Highway-Jose Catolico Avenue Junction.
The project supposedly started on August 9, 2008 and will end on January 15, 2009, just in time before the Robinsons Mall along J. Catolico nears its completion and before the SM GenSan at the Santiago Blvd. commences their construction.
The billboard further names the contractor as Gosset Builders, Inc. and prices the whole project at P18,435,998.31.
Yessirree!!!! Those two junctions are where the most number of traffic accidents occur in the Tuna Capital. Especially during rush hours, they both turn into bottlenecks… especially with the absence of traffic boys at those crucial times.
I just hope that the riding public learn to embrace these two major developments the same way they accepted the first traffic system along the Pioneer Avenue.
Now, if you were to decide, where would you suggest the next traffic lights should be installed? Write your choices below.
- National Highway – Pendatun Avenue Junction
- National Highway – Roxas Avenue Junction
- National Highway – Bulaong Road Junction
- National Highway – Mindanao Polytechnic Junction
- (Name your own choice of streets.)
We will try to collate the data we gather here and maybe, just maybe, show it to Mayor Jun Acharon himself. What do you think, dear readers?

City Hall sets up Traffic Lights System at 2 HiWay Junctions
Nahh nahh nahh dungagan pa jud niño ang bay danan sa kuryente…. ayyy ambot…
How about putting an overpass especially in National Highway coz it’s scary to cross that highway.. 🙁
bitaw miko noh? nice unta og imbes na mag butang ang LGU og welcome arch maayo pa siguro og ROUND ABOUTS with matching landscaping and lots of fountains ang ibutang sa city entry points natin…mas bongga pa og mas maka agaw attention jud…diba? 🙂
kung maputulan ang city hall ng electricity by socoteco and socoteco naman ang putulan ng napocor, both for non-payment of debts, paano ioperate ang traffice light system? di kaya maging white elephant yan gaya ng giant phallic symbol na water tank kuno sa bandang likod ng city hall? ajejeje
@ nida, main road junctions lang po ma’am nida… not unlike in al ain, if you are there, every junctions may roundabout, nakakahilo talaga dyan but mind you lowest ang al ain when it come to vehicular accidents as per stat…hahaha..!tricycles po ang mode of transportation ng gensan..ahehehe..!
flyovers are not pedestrian friendly specially for the elderlies and the pwd’s
dapat butangan pud ug traffic light ana aparente street-national highway kay asta ka traffic dha every morning and hapon.
I dont care sa mga negative comments for me I like to have more traffic lights in our city para in na in tayo like other cities nakadagdag attraction kasi yan sa city natin kahit gaano kaasinso ang city mo pag walang traffic lights mahirap pa rin tingnan.
@bariles –
^^ I agree with you! I love this city! The closest to my heart.
@Toinks – hi toinks… i don’t believe the version on my driver… he was really trying to beat the red light kaya nadisgrasya. i don’t think may problema sa setting ng traffic lights natin…
ormans last blog post..nakakapagod.
Hi guys!
i didn’t realize how much we all care for our beloved city’s streets until reading all these responses.
what can i say except that all the CHOKE POINTS should be installed with traffic lights.
And yes, we can’t do without the traffic police because we need them to apprehend the violators. it’s still a collaboration between man and machine to get all these traffic rules moving.
haaay…. i really love gensan! there’s really no other city quite like it. are we not all lucky to be living here???
traffic light operators? are you joking?… traffic signal systems in gensan are automated.
@orman – “…the lights SUDDENLY changed from green to red.” Mega-noon ba? aba eh dangerous nga ire…hindi ba normally kapag ang lights naka green (go) it should turn to Yellow (ready) first before turning to Red (stop) so vehicles have time to slow down when lights turn to yellow before turning to red for stop. GROUP!!! PAKI CHECK PO NG TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEM NATIN AT MEDYO MALI PO YATA ANG SETTING NG SIGNAL…
or kung hindi muna mag yello before red, edi sana man lang mag BLINK ng 5X ang green BEFORE MAG RED.
ON THE WELCOME ARC, may budget na talaga yan… if am not mistaken tatlo or apat ang nakatoka sa budget…. hopefully maumpisahan by next year…
nung kasagsagan ng tuna fest, nadisgrasya ang innova ko sa crossing ng pioneer & magsaysay where the traffic lights are located. apparently (well according to my driver), the lights SUDDENLY changed from green to red. mabilis takbo nya… yung pick-up sa harapan nya stop bigla so yun… wasak ang innova… parang walang nangyari sa pick-up. my driver blames the traffic lights.
i blame him.
ang moral of the story? kapag malapit ka na sa traffic lights, slow down. rule of thumb yan. NEVER EVER BEAT THE RED LIGHT. dapat ma-educate ang drivers natin. and the best education is getting exposed to it.
so if you ask me? ituloy lang yang mga projects na yan.
in the meantime sisisantehin ko driver ko. joke!
Thank you gensanite and white knight. Thats a very good observation about bicycle and motorcycle lanes. In Lipa City, Ate Vi implemented the motorcycle lanes in their major streets during her term as mayor. so walng mga magugulong tricycle sa main lanes.
Hi Bariles,
I am saddened to see the beautiful trees along Santiago Boulevard and National Highway being cut down presumably to accomodate the traffic lights. Are there no other means to install the lights without sacrificing the trees?
I also notices that the trees along quirino avenue and magsaysay ave where ireneo elementary is located are also being cut down for no reason at all.
What is our CENRO doing?
What they should cut down are the dead trees that poses danger to people. pangit tingnan ang isang city na maraming dead trees and putol na dead trunks na iniwan na lang ng mga nag putol.
It all boils down to street discipline. If the citizens are not disciplined, all the traffic signage, traffic lights and the likes are nothing.
@ sir english: your opinion is well appreciated. indeed, traffic junctions creates horrific accidents especially hitting the amber lights and crossing the intersection even if it is not clear. replacing this traffic signal system with roundabouts on every junctions has a great advantages. one: government will not spent hefty maintenance than traffic signals, second, it adds to the beautification of the place, third, it will serve as a landmark, most of all, it avoids accidents in junctions because motorists will tend to slow down while approaching the junction..
european and middle eastern countries especially here in united arab emirates, roundabouts are still in use in road junctions.
@anonymouse 🙂 –
With due respect to your comment on the blue boys. I think they are still usefull despite may traffic lights na tayo because who will apprehend to those violators? I have noticed in the pioneer avenue, especially sa mga tricycle drivers & even private vehicles too that when the yellow light signals, they immediately rush to their turn and run faster despite wala pa nag green signal. They tend to assume it is okay kahit delikado yun na practice basta maka una lang sila. It is not a good attitude in the streets. I hope this will be corrected by our traffic men soon.
good noticed. i agree completely with you. dapat din talaga maganda ang sidewalk natin with more waiting shed like in pioneer avenue.
@archmykel –
puwede rin dagdagan ng bicycle/motorcycle lane… 🙂
Hi Bariles,
aside from the traffic lights, the city should improve its sidewalk system and pedestrian lanes. Road safety includes providing a safe, comfortable and well maintained sidewalks. Our city’s sidewalkare not attractive to pedestrians.
Again, its a good and timing project by our city government. I’m sure the General’s Motorists are happy of this new another dev’t.
With regards to your NEXT TRAFFIC INSTALLATION suggestion:
I think your above suggested rankings is good and urgent, National Highway-Pendatun Ave., Junction and so on is a must na gyud. Also, may I add, how about Pendatun Ave., cor Laurel Street( Near BIR & Collado)Junction? traffic gyud na diha banda especially during office & school break.
Another thing, suggestion lang since we are talking of dealing with city’s infrastructure project na. I have seen our Mayor’s last SOCA ’08 & one of his projects there is putting the various “Welcome Arc” approaching Gensan (from Katangawan, from Polomolok, from Kiamba & Alabel). I have’nt yet heard of this project to happen this year. I just hope we will have it sooner because it will also create a good impression from other visiting locals and including foreigners going to our city. I understand our city gov’t has many inline projects.
And lastly, visible road guides/signs in major thoroughfares (ex. by putting entrance & exit along pioneer ave. parking area, etc. )are very helpful to local communuters but also to new visitors as well because of our friendly road signs and guide, as we can see it in big cities marked in green and white before going to their place of destinations.
para saken… if it ain’t broke then it’s outdated… change it.
ormans last blog post..no caption
How about a traffic light in the intersection of Magsaysay Ave and Santiago Blvd.. The traffic there is a mayhem!
@anonymouse 🙂 – “City of traffiC lights”?….WHY NOT!, choknut 🙂
^Infrastructure-wise… Impressive!
Hey peeps!
I also get the point of Englishman: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Ajejeje
Updates naman sa construction site ng robs.. hehe tnx btw, Cebu Pacific will be adjusting it’s CEB – GES sched and will add a Sunday frequency by end of Oct still using the Airbus A319… Two Cebu Pacific Planes plus one Airbus of PAL will be visible every M-W-F, soon….
mao nay pangutana nga nagtangag ug dakong GANTI…
KAMO NAY MOPAMALANGDONG…
I think it’s best na after nat’l highway – santiago junction, butangan na pud traffic lights ang nat’l highway – polytechnic junction. . because this is where usually gaagi ato visitors from other places especially if they’re passing thru our airport. . .
I would agree with Kuya Avel na maiksi ang daan at paglagyan ng traffic lights e, hirap na, daming stop 🙂
As to the installation of traffic lights, kahit hindi gaanong mahaba ang sa pioneer, it really helps kse ang mga taga dito, hindi marunong magbigayan. lagi na lng buhol buhol sa intersection. lahat hari.
From a reliable source, the traffic lights project at the National HIghway (as far as i know, magkakaroon din sa may hway-bulaong intersection) is para rin po for security, anti-kidnapping, etc.
we should also look at the positive side of this project. hirap lang din sa j. catolico e 3 malls na 🙂 slow movement na yan 🙂
motorists should be a little more patient 🙂 good luck to us all.hehe
Hindi kaya mga sira2 nman yan? like the one in P. Acharon Blvd lagi lang confusing!? If I were to choose i wud prefer Pendatun Ave. Junction…
if i were to decide, i would like the next traffic lights to be at the following junctions:
nat’l hwy-aparente ave, nat’l hwy-pendatun, nat’l hwy-roxas and all street junctions in downtown gensan. But as toinks commented, the city govt has to do something about the tricycles and habal habal running in the major thoroughfares of the city, they causes traffic esp during rush hours not to mention that most fatal accidents involve motorcycles/habal habal…
Oh no !!
At least that was my first reaction ….
As a foreigner, when you first come to Gensan you realise how well Gensan works w/o traffic lights on very corner.
I remember last year looking down from the balcony of my room at the Sydney hotel, amazed at the multitude of traffic flowing thru the junction – this is civilized mayhem, but it works,
I’m sure the mayor’s team have done there analysis of what junctions need traffic light and even the flow of traffic through those junctions, so that the green time given to each road is appropriate.
You know the worst thing about traffic lights is that is changes people’s habits …. as you approach the light & you see it go amber, you speed up to get thru, others will jump it & the guy waiting on red with his foot on the accelerator …. can all cause new types of accidents.
You know, what I think would would quite well in Gensan, instead of traffic lights are roundabouts.
Lunes umaga, isang kape, sori masiado early for my few words of tagalog !
major junctions of the city as posted by sir avel should have traffic signal systems and junction rules…
Makahadluk magliko dira.. Ahehe!
Ngyeh! Hahaha!
