Barely two weeks ago, GenSan City Mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio finally got a glimpse of how her city’s next mall will look like.
The design team of the upcoming SM City GenSan composed of representatives from Monolith Construction Dev. Corp, general contractor; Jose Siao Ling & Associates, architect; and D.A. Abcede & Associates, project manager, paid her a visit at her office at the City Hall. They were accompanied by GenSan Chamber prexy Jan Ced and Architect Michael Ang, project coordinator for SM City GenSan.
It was there that the group headed by SM City Gensan Architect Jose Siao Ling, presented her with the perspectives, floor plans and blue prints of one of the most-anticipated projects in South Central Mindanao. Assisting him in the presentation were Engr. Dennis Abcede, Jr. (D.A.Abecede & Associates VP) and Engr. Mariano T. See Diet (Monolith Construction Dev. Corp. EVP/Gen Manager).
Mayor Custodio was visibly impressed with the SM City GenSan perspectives and designs and stayed longer for the dialogue which followed which tackled traffic management, sewerage system, garbage handling, employment opportunities and tax incentives, among other topics. Together with the mayor were City Administator Atty. Jong Gonzales and Chief of Staff Myrna Mejorada.
According to the SM Team, the two-story mall will cover a total of 100,000 sq. meters of floor space, which is bigger than SM City Davao’s 80,000 sq. meters.
Its main frontage will face San Miguel Street which will be widened into a four-lane avenue. To see where it is, click this—> SM City GenSan location.
SM Prime Holdings has already acquired a portion of the triangular lot straddling J. Catolico Avenue and San Miguel Street for this plan. It will also provide the traffic signal system at the junction of Santiago Boulevard and San Miguel.
Very noticeable in the perspectives presented to the mayor is the uniquely designed logo of the mall which displays a bigger and more prominent rendering of the words “GENERAL SANTOS“. From Architect Jose Siao Ling came the answer that the emphasis on the Tuna Capital’s name was due to their knowledge that the people of GenSan are extremely proud of their famous city and this is SM’s way of solidifying it.
(Upon hearing this, Bariles who noted the peculiarity could only gasp, “Whoa GenSan!”)
At the Santiago Boulevard side of SM City GenSan is their terminal for public vehicles like jeeps, vans and probably (as suggested by Mayor Custodio), parking for trucks which are usually the vehicles of choice of excursionists and shoppers from the rest of the region.
For sure, the mayor quipped, once SM City GenSan opens, there will be a beeline of these vehicles to the Tuna Capital and the mall should be ready for this.
To help enliven GenSan’s night life and cement its reputation as Region 12’s entertainment capital, SM City General Santos will house its Al Fresco restaurants and bars on the other side of the mall which will also operate until midnight similar to Robinsons Place. Their row of dining establishments promises a refreshing and relaxing ambience since at its center will be a large dancing fountain, an important water element in the newer malls of today.
To top it all, all the four cinemas of SM City GenSan at the second floor will be 3D-equipped.
Ground breaking and fencing of the compound will start immediatly after September 10, 2010 and based on the design team’s estimates, construction will be finished by 10 months at the very least.
This means therefore, that aside from Robinsons Place GenSan, KCC Mall of GenSan and Gaisano City GenSan, the people of Soccksargen will have another shopping destination in time for Christmas 2011 – and its name is SM City General Santos.
About the design. Well, we could not truly judge the finality of it until the entire structure is finish. But @GorgG is right on his comment. In the years to come, SM GenSan would innovate itself, just like their other Malls. In the meantime, lets just wait and see. I’m sure we are all excited to have it done as soon as possible. How I wish SM people are reading our suggestions and comments. Hahaha…
yeah Mr. Bariles, please give us a glimpse of the floor plan if you may. ^-^
ahmmm..can i see the floor plan of SM city Gensan?..,but its ok if its classified info..^^ just getting curious lng po…
this is amzing…! keep it up.
It was so fantastic.Even the design is not so nys, like RPG.But the bottom line there is that, investments n our city is doing wel.W/c is very mre mportant than any other
Saan kaya pwede mag apply? Please reply. Thank you.
@Thanks for all your comments guys especially from our expats working abroad. For whatever it is worth, let us be thankful that big corporations have already sighted GenSan within their investment radar and hopefully this could only redound to our benefit. See you back home soon! Magandang GenSan! 🙂
@Alberto, for employment opportunities, check out an old blog post about that — http://www.gensantos.com/2010/01/28/sm-gensan-needs-management-trainees/
sorry poh.. mr. avel di na mauulit…
nice… very nice…
Wow! Finally… The perspective has arrived…
In fairness, BONGGACIOUS ever so much ang design… 100,000 square meters in a 2 – storey building?
Mas Maganda na talaga ang GENSAN… Yahoo!
Nice BLOG Kuya!
Hope everything will turn out just fine.
i doubt when SM cinemas offers 3d e bababa ang value ng ticket… not because there is a competitor bababa na rin ang KCC or Robinsons. mahal po ang 3D.hehe
congratulations Generals! another employment opportunity for the generals.
SM has been known for the box type mall for long years.it is just a decade or so when they re-invented. in fairness though to SM, mahirap rin naman mag invest ng malaki lalo na if the market is not as much as in the Metro. we should be thankful that they are here.
Like in SM NOrth edsa, its a box type before until the renovation (the carpark), expansion (the block), another expansion (the annex), etc. this is due to ayala malls coming in — now Trinoma in that area. During my college days, box type na box type lang talag but everytime i visit sm, sobrang grabe ang expansion.
so let us just wait when expansion of SM comes. just like KCC and Gaisano when another mall came in. they keep on renovating and expanding much to the appreciation of the consumers.hehe
while they put up here, they expect income of course. siguro naman tayo di lang gawing tambayan ang malls at magpalamig tapos demand ng demand ng better or much development diba? peace =)
kudos to Gensan and SM
wow… ang galing talaga im hoping that when i come back in philippines makikita ko na ang sm na yan… good jobs talaga … congrats po sa lahat ng mga namumuno para maitayo ang sm sa gensa,,,, laki na talaga ng pagbabago…. mabuhay gensan….

@rondrick, @raniello, @james – thanks for commenting! This is really great news! 🙂
@meer, totoong-totoo na 100,000 meters ang SM City Gensan! Yan ang sabi ng Design Team.
@Tisoy, good luck sa application mo. Sana cashier ka na sa susunod. 🙂
@Lito, major major uber level up na nga talaga! 🙂
@Toinks, it’s not too boxy this time dahil kitang kita na ang 2nd floor sa left side ng mall. At least may improvement na from their previous look. And yes, the big name of the city up there surely makes it our own. 🙂
Sorry to say this but I’m a bit disappointed at the first look of it. I can’t feel the “WoW” factor in it. Maybe it’s because, it’s drawing nga lang. Pero hindi eh…the Architect himself have presented it, so, more or less ganoon na nga talaga ang magiging look nito. I still keep on convincing myself na maganda nga ito. This is just my comment though regarding sa perspective. Sana walang magagalit hehe.
I’m just as glad as everyone else that SM has finally set it’s foot on GenSan’s ground. Welcome SM City GenSan! And Congratulations Generals! ˆ-ˆ Oh by the way, I so love the idea of putting on the complete name of the City. Thank You SM! 🙂

nice!lahat nga ng SM bago n ang logo nila.box style prin pro me class naman pagdting sa loob, even here in SM city novaliches pareho ganun din, will be open ds year!congrats generals!hehe,
what can I say? Gensan is unstoppable…tuloy tuloy ang development and she never look back ‘ika nga, which is really good for the generals, i would think one of the lowest ang unemployment rate of the city…hope that traffic will be managed well na rin.
Anyway, thanks for your honest comments. 🙂
@Tisoy, bad ka ha? Peace rin! 🙂
Well, side-by-side ang pagpipilian.

What more I can say! Your site really makes GENSAN a more beautiful place to visit and live in. SM City GenSan is indeed one of the most anticipated malls to be established here in GenSan.
Padayun sa pag-uswag ug paglambo Heneral Santos!
God bless the GENERALSand more powers to Sir Avel for this wonderful site!
@Michael, God bless you too for the kind words. God bless GenSan! 🙂
FINALLY! After many years of waiting for the entry of SM City-GenSan, it’s here. I’m pretty sure we are all excited of this new development and at least we have already seen the perspective plan of how our SM looks like. I think its really a trend now of a mall developers to designed their buildings to a 2 to 3 storey high. Maybe to save costs, space and mobility among its shoppers. I expect SM to put only four (4) cinemas in our city to avoid saturation especially when their is no blockbuster movies. So, its a mixed feeling whether the design was favolous but what is important is SM City-Gensan finally arrive in our place. Another place to shop among locals and for our dear visitors during holiday seasons. Thanks Bariles for making it first..
@white knight, thanks! Para sa GenSan! 🙂
I love SM! Woohooo! Way to go! Gensan!
This is great news! The four 3D theaters will keep me in the mall!
