It’s all over the papers this week.
According to reports from Philippine Star and Business World, to name just a few, General Santos City has the second lowest poverty incidence in Mindanao (at 13.98%), based on the latest survey of the National Statistical Coordination Board in the region for 2006.
Topping the list is General Santos’ sister city in Soccsksargen, Kidapawan with a poverty rate of only 12.46%.
Th NSCB refers to “poverty incidence” as the “proportion of population (or families) with per capita income which is less than the per capita poverty threshold to the total number of pupulation (families) of an area“.
In simple terms, this is an indication of the percentage number of people living below the poverty line in a certain area.
Here then is Mindanao’s Top 10 Cities and Municipalities with the lowest poverty incidence or according to Philstar, “Mindanao’s 10 Richest Municipalities” and Cities:
- Kidapawan City – 12.46%
- General Santos City – 13.98%
- Polomolok, South Cotabato – 14.29%
- Davao City – 14.94%
- Tagum City – 15.42%
- Cagayan de Oro City – 15.5%
- Koronadal City – 16.18%
- Digos City – 18.22%
- Padada, Davao del Sur – 21.99%
- Hagonoy, Davao del Sur – 22.60%.
To all these cities, especially the ones from Region XII (Soccsksargen), congratulations!
And to the administration of GenSan City Mayor Jun Acharon, kudos!

ehhe.. good job gensan.. grabe na ang gensan ngayon ah!
yey! galing2. nakakaproud! yahooo!!! 😀
@jasper0127 –
As long as there are migrants from other places who flock to GenSan for employment and thus stretching our limited resources, it will always be a problem. 🙁
And what is the per capita poverty threshold?
Polomolok is number 3, thanks to agricultural companies kaya malakas ang economy ng lugar and a good leadership through Mayor Lumayag. Mabuhay!
@paul –
Percentage yan. Malaki rin in relation to the population. But we are much better off than other cities like Davao and GenSan… try computing theirs.
expect that this will all worsen this year and next. with the increasing unemployment rate in our biggest industry, marami talagang maaapektuhan. oh well… just the same mabuhay gensan!
ormans last blog post..Akala Ko…
@orman –
Am sure, we have prepared for this eventuality. It’s a worldwide phenomenon. 🙁
Congratulations GenSan !!!! Konting sikap pa at tayo na ang number one………..
@Ram –
Dapat zero poverty incidence, right Ram? Realistically speaking, mahirap because of the migration of people from other localities to gensan which is straining our city’s limited resources. That’s what we have to be thankful for. 🙂
Congrats to our leaders! ‘job well done. . . .
@jasper0127 –
Di naman taga-rito ang mga iyan. Mga dayo. And this happens when Christmas is fast approaching.
This news is so inspiring! let us continue to invite more investors and encourage more trade activities within our community para mas lalo pang lumakas ang local economy natin. Let us support each other. 😉
yeah.. i saw it sa news.. see? mindanao is indeed better compared to other places in the philippines.. if you get to check the places included on the TOP 10, they are all located on the island of MINDANAO..
hypothetical high 5 mindanaoans!
@dimple –
high 5!!!! Galing ng Mindanao!!!! 🙂
sguro..not really mayaman..marami lang yung maunlad:)
@Paul –
I think so, in terms of the number of poor people versus the total population. 🙂
good job dito:)
GALING … KEEP8UP
