Finally, the General Santos Park, formerly known as the Carlos P. Garcia Park across the City Hall building will be improved and renovated starting this month, according to Mayor Jun Acharon.
This was after the winning bidder to the P22.5 million project was announced by the Bids and Awards Committee, the Dellosa Design Build Services, which incidentally is a supporter of the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit. Yipeee!!!!!
The announcement billboard of the Gen. Santos Park rehabilitation
The project will include the construction of a parking area inside the 4.8 hectare tree-filled plaza, cobbled walks, plant boxes, new lamp posts and landscaped promenades for the whole family, among others.
This is a far cry from the plaza of my youth when it was just a wide grass field where my brother and I used to catch grasshoppers with our bare hands and jump over the newly planted tree saplings. Back then, there were no trees to provide shade to park-goers, no benches, no plant boxes, no nothing… and yet, they bring back a lot of good memories.
And so, with this welcome development, I immediately took shots of the plaza (as it is commonly called here) knowing that these images will soon be just be part of GenSan’s history.

Sana ipangalan kay Philip yung name ng Park..hehehe or kahit yung trees nalang.
^^ I agree with you. We should not cut the trees!
Please save the trees at the park, its being cut down again just like at the junction of santiago and national highway.
I agree with orms-its about time heheheh
@jasper0127 – dati to daghan but b4 i leave iligan nindot na pati mga street lights hitech na.
@anonymouse:) – let us hope and pray the Pioneer Avenue beautification fiasco will not be repeated in this park.
Since gaya-gaya naman ang mga ideas ang pinopost dito, why not put up an oceanarium sa general santos park like manila ocean park? since paubos/palayo na ang mga tuna, the oceanarium can feature live swimming tuna. Tapos tawagin nating bariles republic oceanarium! ajejeje
the idea of a marker on the dadiangas tree is brilliant and because ang bariles republic ang unang nagbigay pansin dito – i think it is but fitting na BR ang mag-iisponsor ng marker na yun – God willing, magiging part talaga ng history ng gensan ang bariles republic as well as yung mga nagpapatronize nito ajejeje. . .para pag namasyal tayo sa park pagdating ng panahon na kasa kasama natin mga apo, we’ll have something to tell them na very relevant. . .
@hamel – so what’s your point aside from being a dork?
ormans last blog post..nakakapagod.
@bariles – nakakaexcite naman.. hehe sana 2lad ‘to ng new peoples park ng davao… =)
From the Billboard above (enlarge the pic by clicking on it), it should be finished within 120 calendar days or by February 5, 2009. I hope they finish it right in time for the Kalilangan Festival during the last week of February. 🙂
Instead of a dancing fountain na magastos sa kuryente (global warming na, anobaaaaa!), why not have a fountain na may stage sa gitna where we can have dance/cultural troupes perform? Ajejeje
Or else, why not a dancing fountain na may solar panels para solar-powered ito (o di ba eco-friendly pa).
@Jasper – hi! I meant Jasper0127, not you, kaya quoted ko yung comment nya. ajejeje
Manoy Avel, dapat imonitor ng Bariles Republic ang plans for this park since nasa city hall ka man. Ajejeje
Also, I think I read somewhere here na comment na malapit na daw maputol ang index finger ng statue ni General Santos, any plans to repair it? Kaya ba yan ni Belo? Ajejeje
anonymouse 🙂 , Hi! How are you? I may be inclined towards construction (design-build) but I am not in anyway connected to the contractor. I am a pro-nature builder, nitibo sa Gensan, og pang international ang level hehehe. 😉
In fairness to the contractor (Dellosa Design Build Services), they are only responsible in the proper implementation of the park’s design as per the approved plans in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible. The design will be coming from the the consultant (City Engineer’s) as disclosed by Mr. Avel Manansala.
Me (Jasper) and jasper0127 ay magkaiba po. Sigurado ako riyan. heheheh although Im inclined towards construction (design & build) but Im not in anyway connected to the contractor of the park. Im a pro nature po at pang international akong level hehehe.
In fairness to the contractor (Dellosa Design Build Services) they are only responsible in the implementing of the park’s design as per the approved plan in the most efficient and cost effective possible way. Ang plan og design magagikan pa sa City Engineer’s Office as clarified by Mr. Avel Manansala.:-)
Maayong hapon sa tanan! I just talked to my source and she told me that the design for the plaza will be furnished by the city government, thru the city engineer’s office.
She also confirmed that a few of the nim trees will have to be “sacrificed” and cut down to make way for the parking area and some new structures. Most of the decade-old trees however will remain in their place.
The Dadiangas tree/shrub of course will be left untouched.
Bariles Republic is thinking of donating a marker for the Dadiangas tree, courtesy of its readers. What do you think?? 🙂
@Jasper: Look at what kagawad mar mariano did to pioneer avenue after cutting all those beautiful trees and replacing them with pleasing-to-the-eyes-but-providing-no-shade-against-sun-and-rain palmeras!
wow…
gensan should improve its park..
maxado n taung behind s ibang city..
dapat hnd tau nagpapahuli..
may bagong attraction n nmn s2 s gensan,,…
keep up the good work,,,,
Nice responses to this post, guys! It just goes to show that most of us care about our trees and are mindful of the number of years it took for them to grow this tall providing tired parkgoers with refreshing shade and respite from the heat of the sun.
What I heard was that as early as last year, they already made an inventory of all the trees inside the plaza. For what reason? That I don’t know but hoping that any improvement they make will be based upon the trees’ current locations. 🙂
@Jasper –
Very well said. It gives an idyllic atmosphere in a crowded and often fast-paced city. Although Gensan is not that fast-paced, it’s becoming one.
We are so blessed nga sa Gensan dahil almost all kinds of trees grow in our soil. Unlike in other countries wala masyadong trees ang parks nila kung kaya gumagastos talaga sila ng malaki para lang lagyan ng artificial shade in the form of gigantic tent structures which is in fact sort of like napaka stressful sa mata. Unlike trees it give us a feeling of oneness with mother nature.

^ I don’t think this is a good idea.. Cutting the trees would mean cutting our existence as a city. We should be as green sa possible since cutting them would be disastrous to our very survival.
it’s about time to change the look of gensan park…
dugay na kaayo na…
hopefully the contractor will come up with a good design for the park..

What’s with gensan and the indiscriminate cutting of trees? Yung anak ko na 2 year old, sana may hangin pa na malanghap 20 or 30 years from now.
Maxims last blog post..I’M GOING TO GENSAN FOR MBS2
Fantastic job! Keep them coming.
well it’s about time….
ormans last blog post..nakakapagod.
I have been away from my dear GenSan for quite awhile. And been to different countries and visited their famous landmarks. In every tour, we always ends up to one of the famous places and it’s the park.
Once I went to Iran in Kish Island where they have a very small park not even 1,000 sq meters in terms of area but this place is taken cared of, for they believed that it is part of their history. It played a very vital role in the community. It is their pride even if it is not that magnificent in terms of the landscape, the highlight of that park tour is the 300 years old tree in the middle of the park (I looked around thinking perhaps this is BALITE tree buyag buyag..tabi po tabi po I said it in English baka kasi di ako maintindihan hehehe). They said that this is called the wishing tree, you tie a ribbon or a single thread from the clothes you wear and you close your eyes and wish. How can I missed this once and a lifetime experienced? So I run and pull some thread in my abaya (a traditional muslim clothes we have to wear compulsory in Iran) close my eyes and make a wish and tie it in the tree. I even have my pictures taken. And a lot of thread around it literally you can make a number of abayas out of it.
Anyway the significant of me telling this story is, we can have a newly landscaped park without cutting the trees right? These trees have been there since my dad’s childhood. I myself played, climbed around those trees when I was a kid, it is part of my childhood. I have used the shades of the tree branches during my high school days, not because of dating but because I am a mother majorette at that time where we are invited during one program in the city hall. I always love the GenSan Park, though I know it needs a lot of renovation, reformation, transformation, reconstruction or whatever it is, I am happy that now after 28 years of my existence the government is planning to rehabilitate the park.
So by next year I will be home in God’s grace and expect a brand new park ?
Thank you Mayor Acharon for that but please don’t cut the trees.
january b.s last blog post..fagioli 2007
wohhhh bayad muna kuryente …. bad image ala ga bayad ng kuryente……….public messge and concern citizen
Wow! Great news yan magiging pagbabago sa park ng GenSan! I can’t wait for that day…. 🙂 Proper timing din for the coming holidays! Matatapos po kaya bago magpasko?
well well well, its finally happening…the most important park in the city is finally getting the proper attention and the much needed make over! i lived in gensan for more than 17 years and this park is among the least of my favorite spots in the city for the fact that there is not much there other than the little shrine of the city’s found, GPS (gen. paulino santos)…at one time it even became a pick up point for the city’s more sleazy characters, and much more..
so, congratulations gensan, cheers!
magandang GENSAN!
im so happy to hear this news. it has always been one of my desire that the government will do something about our park. it is strategically located at the heart of the city and a lot of people passes by the streets surrounding it. i am sure a lot of people are very happy to hear this news. i hope it will be a big project already since we’re talking here of millions of pesos. i cannot wait to invite some of my friends there.
sana lagyan nila ng mga fountains so that it will be a tourist spot at the same time. tapos i suggest lagyan ng mga statues ng mga taga gensan who made the Generals proud like pacquiao, navarette and iba pa who gave honnor and pride to our city.
Lyag GENSAN! one pulse, one force, one cruise!
it’s about time!!!
cheers to the city government for this project… 😀
hello Sir jasper! It’s nice to hear that you’re also a regular browser of bariles articles just like mee. . .stay connected!
Wow, this surely is good news for the generals! Another landmark to be proud of.
I know Architect Dellosa and Co. are very capable of transforming this place into one of the most beautiful parks in Mindanao.
Kudos to our Gensan leaders for this noble project!
Thats good masyadong behind park natin dapat putolin lahat na trees at palitan ng napakagandang landscaping para in thanks Mayor Jun.
Good news! Keep soaring high Gensan..
